This week we get to hear from a woman who has many talents. Originally an athlete, Pavlina Akritas, then went on to study electrical engineering specialising in lighting design. Its wonderful to hear from a polymath, i.e. someone who uses both her left brain and right brain, whilst also managing recently having a baby and wanting to stay fit. She's passionate about her work and functions at the intersection of where art meets science and she does all of this with such poise!

Krystina R was so refreshing to listen too, because she’s achieved so much, yet isn’t someone who appears to be the martyr.  She is someone who seems to take life as it comes and with everything that happens to her, she tackles it head on, with vulnerability and to the best of her capabilities.  It was reassuring to know that she struggled with motherhood in the beginning only to end up finding a deeper sense of confidence than she has ever had before.  She learns from everything that happens to her.  A lesson that could all benefit from.

Samantha M is so lovely and so switched on. From a young age, she knew that she didn't want to follow the conventional path into academia, just for the sake of getting 'qualifications'. She wanted to start working straightaway, despite achieving highly at school. Sam is a perfect example of how apprenticeships are a golden gateway into a solid career. By starting in industry early, you clock up valuable experience and there are so many advantages to this path into industry. It's not for everyone and its certainly hard work. Sam shares her perspectives on it.

Katriya Sabin works for the UK Atomic Energy Agency combining her love of art and physics into one creative profession - nuclear fusion.  She lives off grid herself and her views about sexism in engineering and the pressure schools put on youngsters is very much 'off-grid' too.  She is outspoken, unconventional and uniquely gifted and smart.  A conversation with her and refreshingly rebellious.  Why hold back on what you truly believe, it only slows progress down..Katriya, certainly speaks the truth no one else has had the confidence to say.  Maybe, it because she knows she's an asset to the  nuclear fusion industry..

Innervation: S2 Ep 34 Just say YES

Anna Gates wasn’t a typical academic student.  She definitely preferred to learn on the job, but also wanted a degree and found an apprenticeship in civil engineering.  What is refreshing about this conversation is her genuine interest in the environment and providing power to 6 million homes through nuclear power in a sustainable way.  Yet she has also thought cleverly and strategically about her career choices.  With no student debt, bespoke training on the job and a guaranteed career path in an industry that she loves.  It hard not to be inspired by her farsightedness.  After listening to her, if I had my time all over again, I would have taken an apprenticeship route too!

This week we celebrated International Women and Girls in Science Day (Feb 11th) and to honour that, we hear from Alyssa Carson who's big is goal is to get to space as an astronaut.  She is the paving the way there by focussing on the small steps, which includes research in astrobiology and lots of time spent on encouraging other girls into STEM too.  How does someone who is 20 years old know so early on in life what she wants..we find out..

Lisa Cook sort-of, fell into engineering, but was also raised by two engineers. She has such an inspiring attitude of: if you want something go get it. Listening to her, gives you a boost for doing amazing things in your own life. She is driven by a genuine love for her work as an engineer and a desire to provide for her family. As a result, she appears to 'have-it-all' - check out her story!

India Lloyd-Evans reached out to me with some questions about combining her two seemingly conflicting interests in physics and design.  Who am I to know what is best for her, was my first thought.  Turns out that my zig-zag career and contrasting skillset can be useful to people who are both left-brain and right brain and I can certainly share my experiences.  This episode is a little like a live mentoring session, where the key is in getting to know yourselves a little bit more...

Georgia Lilley is really smart.  She didn't follow the herd, but chose a career path that worked for her.  She is 22 and in 1 year's time, she would have clocked up five years of work experience, have a university degree in Civil Engineering and no student debt, because she chose the apprenticeship route into engineering.  Despite being an all-rounder at school, with a passion for physics, she is now doing what she loves, and the company who sponsored her have a tailor-made employee!  The conversation disrupts stereotypes around academia, women in engineering and the doing what you love!

Halima Bhayat is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, maths and arts) educator and is passionate about bringing more girls into typically male-dominated fields.  She talks about her own childhood and culture, which has often left her feeling dismissed.  She fights hard to be seen and heard and is using her own empowerment to empower others.
